How To Read Your Tyre Wear

Friday 17th February 2023

Is your tyre wearing down, but you have no idea what the problem is? There actually tends to be common signs on the tyre wear itself that can indicate what the issue with your tyre is. Learning this can prevent accidents and keep you safe.
Excessive Wear in the Middle

This indicates that the tyre is over-inflated – as the middle part of the tyre is constantly in contact with the road. When inflating your tyres you don’t actually want to inflate them, so there is no ‘bulge’ a the bottom, you should always check your tyre pressure with a reliable tyre gauge.

Under Inflation

Possibly the most common in trailer tyres, under-inflating means that there is too much contact with the road – again make sure you are checking your tyre with a reliable gauge.

Feathering

What is feathering? This is when the edge of each tread rib develops a rounded edge on one side and sharp on the other. The cause of this usually is an incorrect toe-in setting which can be solved by having it set in correctly.

One Side Wear

Inner or outer ribs wearing faster is usually due to an incorrect wheel alignment. There is also the possibility of excessive curvature in the axle causing it to lean too much to the inside or outside, therefore, putting pressure on one side of the tyre. There are a few things you can do to fix this one being realigning the tyres, but this problem could also be caused by sagging springs, overloaded trailers, or unbalanced loads – make sure to check these then decide your solution based on this.

Cupping

Cupping is when scalloped dips appear around the edge of the tread. This is usually due to worn or bent suspension. The worn or bent components will need to be replaced.
