How To: Identifying Your Trailer Hub Size

The hub on your trailer is what enables it to move in a forward motion behind the towing vehicle. When you need to replace your hubs, there is a number of different bits of information and measurements that you need to have or be able to provide in order to identify the correct hub.

  1. Firstly, measure the inside diameter of the brake drum and the width of the brake shoe. This will help us to know what size of brake drum we want to be looking for
  2. Secondly, look to see if there are any names or logos on the grease cap. If there are, this will help identify what make of drum you have got.
  3. Make a note of how many wheel studs / bolts that the hub has
  4. Measure and record the PCD of the hub. If you’re not sure how to work this out, we have a blog that explains what the pitch circle diameter measurement is and how to calculate it here
  5. Have a look to see if there are any casting references on the drum itself. These can either be on the inside of the drum or on the outside.
  6. Remove the bearings and the oil seals from the hub and make a note of the numbers that are on both of these as well.

If any of the above information is not available on the drum that you have, then have a look at the axle serial number plate and send in a photo of this. The axle manufacturer will be able to work out what drum was fitted at the time of manufacture from this information.

Once you have all of this information, finding the correct trailer hub should be a simple process. If you need a hand identifying your hub, give our friendly team a call on 01206 795949 or WhatsApp us on 01206 585439.
